Bald Eagle Viewing
Some of the best months for bald eagle are the winter months, when they flock to Starved Rock searching for food. You’ll love hanging out and watching eagles from the top of starved rock. And if the river is frozen you’ll find even more bald eagles!
With 13 miles of hiking trails, there’s great adventure to be had at Starved Rock. You can enjoy a free guided hike every Saturday and Sunday at 9:30 am. Your guide will take you on a. tour and discuss the history, geology, flora, and fauna of the park, as well as French Canyon or Eagles Cliff Overlook, Lovers Leap Overlook, and Wildcat Canyon.
One of the best things about this park is that dogs are allows, however, they must be kept on a leash. Please remember to pick up after your dog and dispose of waste in trash cans. Dogs are also not allowed to drink from waterfalls, creeks, or the river as it can introduce bacteria to the body of water that isn’t native or healthy.
Trails are open all year, but it’s important that you keep on delegated trails. You can find trail maps at the access points, as well as at points of interest. All maps are color coded and their trails are marked respectively.
Exploring the majestic bluffs and canyons is the park’s primary attraction, and there are 13 miles of well-marked trails to help you enjoy them.
Dogs are allowed at the park as long as they are kept on a leash, their owners pick up after them and dispose of waste in trash cans, and provide them adequate water while on the trail (do not drink from waterfalls, creeks, or the river). Yellow dots on posts indicate that you are moving away from the lodge or visitor center, and white dots mean you are returning.
